During pregnancy, because of the hormonal upheavals 1 in 4 women sees her vision change. Difficulty seeing from a distance or when the brightness decreases, intolerance to contact lenses are the most common disorders. Temporary, this situation should not worry you.

Visual disorders that may affect all pregnant women

  • During pregnancy, it is common for some visual disturbances to occur during the last trimester of pregnancy.
  • They are due to hormonal upheavals that alter the curvature of the cornea or the tear film. Main fault, progesterone, which causes a retention of water in the cornea, retention all the stronger as we approach the term. This results in edema (swelling) of the cornea that changes its radius of curvature, affecting vision.
  • This can lead to myopatization (difficulty seeing from a distance), night blindness (difficulty seeing when the brightness decreases) or dry eye.
  • These disorders can affect during pregnancy all women with or without a correction.
  • There is no genetic predisposition to this change in vision that affects 1 in 4 pregnant women.
  • You should also know that it is common during pregnancy to feel visual fatigue at the end of the day, sometimes headaches.

What to do in case of visual disturbances?

  • Pregnant women who did not suffer from any visual disturbances before their pregnancy do not need to get a pair of glasses.
  • It is also not useful for those who already had a correction, using glasses or contact lenses, to change during pregnancy. About 2 months after giving birth, they will have to undergo an ophthalmological test to see if there has been a change in their vision, a slight worsening of their myopia for example.
  • In the meantime, there is nothing to do. This visual gene will resolve spontaneously between 6 and 8 weeks after delivery.
  • If other disorders than those described occur, do not hesitate to consult an ophthalmologist.
