Looking for a gentle and natural method to give birth? Think about self-hypnosis, this technique is more and more often used to relieve small pains of pregnancy and give birth serenely.

Self hypnosis: what is the principle?

  • As a rule, self-hypnosis sessions are short (allow about ten minutes). They can begin as early as the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy, under the guidance of midwives trained in hypnosis. The number of sessions required to master the technique is variable (it can take 4 to 5 sessions in many cases).
  • The purpose of the sessions is to teach you how to immerse yourself in a modified state of consciousness. There is no risk of falling asleep: it is more about dissociating one's body and mind in order to better manage the pain of contractions, to relax and to remain calm during childbirth.
  • In general, self-hypnosis relies mainly on positive visualizations (you can imagine on a paradise beach for example) and breathing techniques. The future dad can also get involved in the process and help you relax on the day.

Use self-hypnosis against pregnancy sickness?

  • Between the hormonal upheavals that influence the morale and the questioning of a child's imminent arrival, a pregnancy can be accompanied by a certain amount of stress. The latter can be controlled through self-hypnosis sessions, which help to plunge into a state of relaxation.
  • By the way, they also help fight pregnancy problems directly related to anxiety such as insomnia, for example. But that's not all: self-hypnosis also aims to reduce the impact of hormonal changes on the body and thus reduce nausea and vomiting.

Self-hypnosis: what's the use on D-day?

  • Self-hypnosis would help to calm down and better manage contractions, especially in the absence of epidurals. It would also give birth more quickly. For the moment, the effects of hypnosis on the pain of childbirth are not yet recognized by the INSERM (National Institute of Health and Medical Research). However, in a large study conducted by INSERM researchers in 2015 *, many of the effects of hypnosis have been officially recognized. In particular, it has been shown that hypnosis helps to reduce the amount of sedatives or analgesics used during an operation. It can be interesting in case of cesarean section. Note: Even if you have not followed self-hypnosis sessions, you can get the support of a midwife trained in hypnosis during delivery in some maternity wards.

Self-hypnosis: contraindications?

  • Hypnosis is not recommended for severe psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. Apart from this contraindication, everyone would be hypnotized more or less easily.
  • If you are particularly receptive to hypnosis, self-hypnosis sessions will soon bear fruit. Otherwise, several sessions will be necessary to see the first benefits.
